The combination of high temperatures and low rainfall at the end of the summer means your lawn needs more water than usual to look its best. Read on to learn five ways to keep your utility bill in check by saving water outside and inside.

1. Beat the heat.

Water your lawn early in the morning or after the sun goes down. Avoid watering in the middle, hottest part of the day. The hot sun will evaporate much of the water before it can help your lawn.

2. Measure it out.

There is a pretty good chance you’re overwatering your lawn. Most lawns only need about an inch of water a week. That includes rainfall. Place a measuring cup in your yard, turn on the sprinklers and see how long it takes to fill the cup with one inch of water. Going forward, water your lawn for that amount of time.

3. Go long.

You can actually train your grass to need less water. Raising your mower blade creates a more drought-resistant lawn by promoting deeper root growth.

4. Little things add up.

Moving inside, there are a number of places to save water. One of the most obvious is in the bathroom. It sounds simple, but turning off the water while you brush your teeth and taking showers instead of baths really do save water.

5. Speaking of showers.

Showering accounts for nearly 17% of indoor water use. Installing just one efficient, low-flow shower head in your home can save almost 3,000 gallons of water a year!
